Redye Strategy: We know you'll be wearing your tshirt a lot! That means more risk of picking up stains you might not be able to get rid off. That's why your circular tshirt has been delivered with a natural dye kit. You'll be able to disguise those stains or in the (hopefully unlikely!) case that you get bored of your tshirt, respark interest by dyeing it a new colour. Prolong the life of your tshirt and build a stronger emotional connection by engaging in this fun activity. What you'll need:
• 17L Stainless steel pot
• A pair of tongs
• Stable heat source
• Rubber gloves
• Timer
Natural dyes are a little more labourious but are preferred over synthetic dyes in the chemical recycling process.
Step 1 Prewash
First, we need to prepare the tshirt for the dyeing process. Place the tshirt in the pot and fill with 15L of cold water. Add the first bag (labelled 1) and stir until completely dissolved. Bring the temperature to just below boiling point and keep the tshirt in the solution for 30 minutes. Consistantly stir the tshirt to evenly spread the solution. After 30 minutes, let the solution cool down enough to be able to handle the tshirt comfortably. Drain the liquid and give the tshirt a good rinse under cold water.
Step 2 Mordanting
Now, we need to prepare the fabric to be able to absorb the dye properly.Place the tshirt back into the pot and fill with 15L of cold water. Add the second bag (labelled 2) and stir until completely dissolved.
Step 3 Dyeing
We are now ready to dye the tshirt!
Please keep in mind that due to the nature of it, natural dyes are prone to have inconsitancies in colour variation but we think this just adds to the uniquness and personality of the piece :-)
Step 4 Fixative
Now, we have to ensure that the colour is permanantly fixed onto the fibres. Please follow the same steps as described in step 2, using the final bag (labelled 4). After 30 minutes, let the solution cool down enough to be able to handle the tshirt comfortably. Drain the liquid and give the tshirt a good rinse under cold water. Rinse until the water runs somewhat clear and squeeze out as much excess water as possible. Leave the tshirt to air-dry on a rack overnight to allow the dye to settle. The next day, you may wash the tshirt on its own in the washing machine at 30 degrees using a mild detergent. This should confidently remove all loose dyestuff. Place the tshirt back into the pot and fill with 15L of cold water. Add the third bag (labelled 3) and stir until well incorporated. Bring the temerpature to just below boiling point and keep the tshirt in the solution for 60 minutes. Consistantly stir the tshirt to evenly spread the solution and ensure even colouring. After 60 minutes, let the solution cool down enough to be able to handle the tshirt comfortably. Drain the liquid and give the tshirt a good rise under cold water. Don't worry if you still have colour run-off after rinsing.
Special Care Instructions. Wash as normal at 30 degrees with similar colours. Air-dry and store out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
